Federal Authorities tie Murders to Identity Theft Ring...March 6, 2010 - New York, NY
A man federal authorities accuse of leading a Brooklyn, NY husband-and-wife identity theft team has been charged with killing two of their ID theft victims. In addition to murder charges, the new indictment charges him and wife Julia Yakovlev, 36, with 17 counts of identity theft, bank fraud, credit card fraud and "effecting fraudulent transactions."
"Identity theft victims usually lose their money," NYPD Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said in a statement, "In this case, they allegedly lost their lives, too."
The victim was last seen on October 15, 2007, leaving her apartment on a security video camera. Immediately after her disappearance, the couple began withdrawing money and purchasing various items in accused's name, according to court documents.

An Identity Theft crime ring located in Palm Beach County obtained information collected by computer hackers and used it to print fake driver's licenses, birth certificates and Social Security cards in real people's names, federal agents said. In a sworn statement unsealed recently, the Federal Beaurea of Investigation detailed a month long undercover sting that netted seven arrests on identity theft, conspiracy and other related fraud charges.
In June and July, the ring made 32 fake IDs using information stolen from people in Florida, California and other states and showed agents a list of 110 real identities to choose from. Authorities stressed the need for individuals to monitor their credit reports and take other precautions to protect their information.
