Indiana Chases Child Support in Casinos 1/29/2010
The Indiana Senate approves new measure to catch deadbeat parents: facing over $ 2 billion in unpaid child support payments, a new measure will require casinos to check jackpot winners against a database. The state says there are presently 150,000 parents in Indiana who owe back child support to the custodial parent. "It's the right thing to do to make sure these children do not suffer for the sins or the mistakes of their parents," said Senator Richard Bray.
Casino operators fear a backlash by patrons due to longer delays in paying out on the winnings. In order for a parent to lose their jackpot winnings, they would have to win a pot of $1200 or more - and they must be at least $2000 in arrears on their child support payments. The bill now moves on to the House for approval.
