Oct 3, 2009 - U.S. Consumer Bankruptcies Top 1 Million in the First 9 Months of 2009
According to the American Bankruptcy Institute, U.S. consumer bankruptcies rose past one million through the 1st nine months of 2009, the highest since the year 2005 when changes to bankruptcy laws were made. Personal bankruptcies in September totaled 124,790, which the institute, an organization or bankruptcy professionals, said was the fourth-highest in a single month since 2005, and up from 88,663 in September 2008.
The American Bankruptcy Institute is the largest multi-disciplinary, non-partisan organization dedicated to research and education on matters related to insolvency. ABI was founded in 1982 to provide Congress and the public with unbiased analysis of bankruptcy issues.
