Obama Administration considers Immigration Reform

March 3, 2010 - Washington, DC

Reports have the White House in discussion of the prospects for reviving a major overhaul of the nation's immigration laws, a commitment that President Obama has postponed once already.Obama took up the issue privately with his staff members Monday presumably in a bid to advance a bill through Congress before lawmakers become too distracted by approaching midterm elections.

In the session, Pres. Obama and members of his Domestic Policy Council devised ways to resuscitate the effort in a White House meeting with two senators, Democrat Charles Schumer of NY and Republican Lindsey Graham of S. Carolina -- who have spent many months in attempts to craft a bill.

According to a source that is familiar with the meeting details, the White House could ask Schumer & Graham to at least produce an outline that could eventually be turned into legislative language. As part of the bill, it would include a path toward citizenship for the 10.8 million people currently living in the United States illegally. It was clear to point out that Citizenship would not be granted lightly, the White House said. Presently un-documented workers will need to register, pay income taxes and ultimates pay a penalty for violating the law. Additionally, failure to comply might result in deportation.
